Forbidden Reflections in Diffraction Patterns
Most people who have enough of an interest in crystallography to have reached this stage of the course will be aware that diffraction patterns often have certain reflections ‘missing’. They will also likely know that this depends on the space group of the material they are measuring, but may not understand the origins of this.
The origins are relatively simple, deriving from the structure factor (\(F_{hkl}\)):
